In December 2000, the Modern Baroque Opera Company in Vancouver,
joined forces with Lord Nelson Elementary School in East Vancouver
to present the world premiere of Casablanca, you must be joking
(which they retitled as The Child, the Book, and the Broomstick)
at the East Vancouver Cultural Centre (now called The Clutch)
The production, directed by Kate Hutchinson and conducted by
combined professional musicians and children. This is what Louise Phillips of the
Vancouver Courier had to say:
...gets a glowing report
...The MBO production brims with appeal for children....it sounds as if the slightly loopy plot was dreamed up by kids and their unfettered imaginations....
....Kudos to director Kate Hutchinson for the minor miracle of directing so many people in so small a space, and to the costume team...
....Modern Baroque Opera receives an A for this latest effort, and is hereby requested to produce another one soon.
